Al Segundo

In his life Al Segundo has: played professional football, umpired baseball, tended bar, done standup comedy, wrestled a bear, and once borrowed $12 dollars from Bill Cosby. (he was 19). “I have been very fortunate”, Al says, “ to work with and, more importantly, become friends with some wonderful people in my life”.

His interests are varied. He loves really good movies (from "A Few Good Men" to "Tootsie") and really, and he means REALLY, bad movies, (from "Cocktail" to "Xanadu"). 

He is an avid Notre Dame football fan, although he graduated from the City University of New York. Back in NYC - such ND fans are lovingly called the "Subway Alumni". He also roots for the NY Rangers, Chicago Cubs, the NY Knicks and the NY Giants. When asked, "Why the Cubs?" Al says, “I have no idea but it has been my team since I was 7 years old”. Back in New York City – Al’s dad was a NY Giant fan and his mom rooted for the Brooklyn Dodgers. “So I guess I picked a neutral team. And, no, there was no chance at all that I could ever root for the Yankees. That would have caused a National League/American League "Civil War" in our house. Forgiveness was in my father's nature, except when it came to the American League”.

Al is a member of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists. As concerns his writing, he reveals he has been greatly influenced by: Dave Barry, Russell Baker, Dan Jenkins, Jimmy Breslin, S.J. Perelman and Jean Shepherd. “Words have always intrigued me”, Al says, “and these people use them like gems fitted into a crown”.

Al tells us he is in the midst of writing a book. “It’s the least I can do for myself”, he told us. The political satirist Mark Russell said, "Inside every old man, is a young man trying to figure out, WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?" Al couldn't agree with brother Russell any more. Perhaps this endeavor can help answer that question for him.
